The title of this exhibition derives from a series of drawings on photocopies, dating from 2003, which are now being shown for the first time. In these drawings, Alexandre Estrela devotes his energies to the serial exploration of the same image (a falling body) in order to examine questions relating to gravity, weight and velocity. It is a prosthetic body, formed from a parachutist’s helmet, a video camera and a photographic camera, bringing to mind the artist’s recurrent interest both in the limits of perception and in limit experiences of perception, frequently materialised in his work through a self-reflexive approach to the properties and possibilities of video as a medium, pursuing the tradition of avant-garde and experimental cinema. The exhibition also includes two recent and previously unseen works that belong to a lineage of pieces in which the artist combines the immateriality of the video projection with a material element that produces a sculptural effect, while, at the same time, taking part in the image construction. In these works, Estrela once again takes as his subject very specific phenomena that allow him not only to continue his research centred upon visual perception, but also, above all else, to give rise to an experience of that same nature, which only becomes possible within the strict confines of each work.
