Cadernos de Escritores (Writers’ Notebooks) are a series of works produced by Álvaro Lapa between 1975 and 2005, a year before his death. Lendo Resolve-se (Reading Solves) is based on this body of works and underlines the constant cross-references that the artist promoted between painting and literature, in an attempt to decode his enigmatic practice, marked by the constant idea of friction. It is also a way of stressing the idiosyncrasy of one of the most relevant projects of twentieth-century Portuguese art, paying tribute to major authors – Homer, Pessoa, Kafka, William Burroughs, Beckett – and produced by Lapa over the course of 30 years.

The paintings evoking the hypothetical writers’ notebooks. The catalogue will include information and images that have never been published before and will be a fundamental tool for the study of Álvaro Lapa’s oeuvre.
