Applications: Artificial Intelligence

LUÍSA COHEUR, PEDRO BIZARRO, MILIND TAMBE

Artificial Intelligence: Applications, the first debate in the cycle, presents the current state of some of the main applications of artificial intelligence, its possibilities and its limits.

To begin with, we will look at major areas of research, such as robots that we can already talk to and the possibilities of processing the natural language of conversational agents; the use of artificial intelligence and robotic multiagents for the social good; the use of artificial intelligence in the implementation of security systems and in combating computer and other types of fraud.

Biographies Artificial Intelligence: Applications

Luísa Coheur (ist, portugal)

Luísa Coheur was born in Lisbon, adores teaching and is passionate about good stories. She is a graduate in Applied Mathematics and Computing from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), having subsequently obtained a PhD from IST and the Université Blaise-Pascal in the area of natural language processing. She is a lecturer in the Department of Computer Engineering at IST and a researcher at INESC-ID. Her special area of study is interfaces in natural language. As she believes that science must be placed at the service of the public good, she is developing, among other things, a translator from Portuguese to Portuguese sign language, as well as software which makes it possible to create exercises that can help children with special needs. When she has time (in the summer), she writes. She has already published three (non-scientific) books and two short stories.

Milind Tambe (India and EUA)

Milind Tambe is Helen N. and Emmett H. Jones Professor in Engineering at the University of Southern California (USC) and the Founding Co-Director of CAIS, the USC Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Society, where his research focuses on advancing AI and multiagent systems research for the social good. He received his PhD from the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University and is a fellow of AAAI (Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence) and ACM (Association for Computing Machinery). Prof. Tambe has contributed several foundational papers in Artificial Intelligence in areas such as those of intelligent agents and multiagent systems and computational game theory; these theoretical works have received more than a dozen awards at a number of Artificial Intelligence Conferences and workshops, such as the International Joint Conference on AI (IJCAI), the International Conference on Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems (AAMAS), Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence (IAAI) and the International Conference on Intelligent Virtual Agents (IVA). Furthermore, today, Prof. Tambe is a pioneer in the real world of implementations of security games, which has led to his team receiving praise from the US Coast Guard, the Los Angeles Airport Police and the Federal Air Marshals Service. He is the recipient of the IJCAI (International Joint Conference on AI) John McCarthy Award, the ACM/SIGAI Autonomous Agents Research Award, the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation Homeland Security award, the INFORMS Wagner prize for excellence in Operations Research, the Rist Prize of the Military Operations Research Society, the IBM Faculty Award, the Okawa Foundation faculty research award, and the RoboCup scientific challenge award, among others. For his teaching and tutorial work, o Prof. Tambe received the USC Steven B. Sample Teaching and Mentoring award, among others, and is a co-founder of a company based on his research work, Avata Intelligence.

Pedro Bizarro (Feedzai, Portugal and EUA)

Pedro Bizarro is a co-founder and Chief Science Officer of Feedzai. He began his career in the academic world and in research, later transforming his technical experience into business success, by helping to develop the artificial intelligence platform operated by Feedzai, the leader in the fight against fraud. Pedro Bizarro is an official member of the Forbes Technology Council, a visiting lecturer at the Carnegie Mellon University and a Fulbright scholar. He has worked with CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, and has a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Madison - Wisconsin.

Sinopses Artificial Intelligence: Applications

DEBATE - April 17, 16h00 – 18h00 – Main Auditorium
Luisa Coheur (IST, Portugal), Pedro Bizarro (Feedzai, Portugal e EUA), Millind Tambe (India e EUA)

Luísa Coheur is a lecturer in the Department of Computer Engineering at IST and a researcher at INESC-ID

In this talk, Luísa Coheur will speak to us about natural language processing, one of the great areas of artificial intelligence, and, in particular, about conservational agents, nowadays more commonly known as "chatbots". What is behind a chatbot? Do they really understand us? From the old ELIZA (the first ever chatbot, created in the 1960s) to the present-day super-famous Siri, Cortana and Alexa, what has changed? What were the challenges that have been overcome? What still remains to be resolved? What is real and what is science fiction? Will we ever be able to master something so complex as the language that we talk? These are questions that Luísa Coheur will attempt to answer.

Pedro Bizarro, co-founder and Chief Science Officer da Feedzai

Global financial institutions, banks, payment processors and e-commerce platforms, they all have one thing in common: the level of threat has increased dramatically with the rise of sophisticated technology used to conduct fraudulent activities. Pedro Bizarro, co-founder, and CSO of Feedzai will explain how AI has a central role in detecting global-scale fraud attacks, preventing the expansion of complex money laundering networks and monitoring financial risk end-to-end.

Artificial Intelligence: Applications, Implications and Speculations

Artificial intelligence is increasingly imposing itself on the reality of contemporary societies, although new technological developments come into being every day, this phenomenon is not correspondingly reflected in the public sphere. Considering that it is important to know and discuss this reality, this cycle of debates takes a look at the current applications of artificial intelligence reflecting upon its social implications in a whole range of different areas (ranging from health to privacy, employability and other areas) and the way in which the
future can be imagined within this new paradigm.

Between April and June, the cycle is divided into three separate moments, each of them a double programme: a debate with several speakers from the academic and business worlds and a conference.
