For a long time, Evil was personified by the Devil – or Anti-Christ, Satan, Leviathan, Lucifer – but also symbolised by the Witch, Sorcerer, Woman, Animal, Hybrid, Mutant and many others. We find it in the Bible, at the centre of literary and artistic creations and in social and moral discourses. In due course, Evil extended to the ideas of social injustice, violence, sickness, capitalism, the atomic
bomb, pollution. Here, it is divided into judges and juries, more akin to a chorus under the effect of a spell.
Marlene Monteiro Freitas has gained international recognition with her virtuoso and expressive choreographies. Considered among the most original and influential voices in modern-day choreography, she has presented her creations at the world’s most prestigious festivals and theatres, from New York to Seoul and from Montreal to Lisbon. In 2018, she was awarded the Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale.
