It is quite likely that we all know where Rui Reininho comes from, but perhaps our greatest doubt is knowing where he is going, and where he will be taking us. In the year when we are celebrating the 40th anniversary of his first joining the group GNR, Reininho has surprised us by organising another quite different party in a remote place that it is difficult to reach. To arrive at 20 000 Éguas Submarinas, the shortest route is not through his previous solo album Companhia das Índias, from 2008, but by remembering some of the experiments from the beginning of his career with Jorge Lima Barreto in Anar Band, in the late 1970s. In this new work, Reininho not only returns to the restlessness of his past, but he also remakes his own present in the world of pop music by creating songs that are diluted into instrumentals without any recognisable form, allowing each composition to create its own roots and stories.
