Deaf and disabled people in higher artistic education

Deaf and disabled people continue to face various barriers to higher arts education continues to face various barriers: physical spaces, support services, curriculum and methodology adaptation, and, above all, a widespread lack of knowledge about accessibility and inclusion. Even so, some Deaf and disabled people have reached higher education in Portugal. On December 3, the publication Research on the Role of Educational Institutions in Fostering Accessibility for Disabled Artists and Culture Professionals is launched, as part of the Europe Beyond Access project, in which Culturgest is a partner. On December 4, we will hear from people who accessed higher education: Inês Gonçalves, a visually impaired person who studied at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema of the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute; Vasco Seromenho, the first Deaf person to attend the same school; and Madalena Pombeiro, a student with reduced mobility at the theatre course at the University of Évora.
