Drinkable: The Waters We Drink and Care For

Water is a resource that we need to take care of, both in terms of its management during periods of scarcity, and in terms of its quality.

The challenges of preserving water quality are up for debate, as well as the need for integrated management of water resources, and the importance of civic involvement in the defense of rivers and aquifers. In times of climate crisis, the call is for collective action with the intention of guaranteeing drinking water for future generations.

This meeting features Sara Correia, from Associação ZERO, a master in environmental engineering and specialist in water management policies, Américo Ferreira, from GEOTA – Grupo de Estudos de Ordenamento do Território e Ambiente (Study Group on Territorial Planning and the Environment), an economist with a vast experience in international water and sanitation projects, and Francisco Pinheiro and Nuno Barroso, from the Guarda Rios collective, which investigates and celebrates riverside ecosystems through art and community action.

Guarda Rios is a research and creative collective focused on riverine territories. It promotes a culture of water and a closer relationship with rivers through participatory artistic actions and processes of co-learning, conviviality, and celebration. Given the increasing desertification of the territory, it is crucial to pay attention to rivers and their ecosystems, as well as the ancestral cultures that depend on them.

Since 2019, the collective has been mapping issues related to water management and human impact on river ecosystems, sharing its work through walks, meetings, exhibitions, and events, including Desejar – Movimento de Artes e Lugares Comuns / Braga 25 (2025); Programa Atos of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II / Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (2023); Ilustração à Vista – Desenhar um Território, 23 Milhas, Ílhavo (2022); and Não É Nada É Isto Tudo – Appleton Box, Lisbon (2021).
