Based on an investigation by journalist Joana Pereira Bastos, director and filmmaker Marco Martins created a show about an unprecedented summer camp for the children of political prisoners, in 1972 in Caldas da Rainha. For two weeks, 18 children between the ages of 3 and 14, marked by their parents’ imprisonment and with a past of clandestinity and loneliness, learned for the first time to play together and in freedom. Marco Martins brings together a cast of children and some of the colony’s participants to work from personal stories and experiences and approach a broader reflection on history, memory, and oppression, in a play in which the legacy of the music of intervention is a fundamental aspect.
Marco Martins’ artistic work often arises from encounters with specific and peripheral communities with whom he develops long creative processes, in which the lives and stories of his performers become the basis of his creations. Far from so-called documentary theatre, each project involves a shared search for everyday poetry.
