Urban Genome: Cities as Living Organisms

João Seixas

Cities are changing significantly, as are the sciences that study them. Continuous technological, economic, and sociocultural transformations are emerging, reshaping urban life. Meanwhile, we have been living through times of political reorientation and almost permanent crisis, which calls into question the  right to the city. Nevertheless, it seems clear that it will be through new understandings and the consequent transformation of the systems and metabolisms of cities that a significant part of the great contemporary issues will be decided.

In three stages, the O Genoma Urbano (Urban Genome cycle) observes the city as a living and thinking organism. What, after all, is its genetic material, and what elements define urbanity and urban life? Seeking to interconnect the sciences for urban issues with seemingly distant fields, such as biotechnology or neuroscience, we consider the possibilities and needs for building fairer and more sustainable urban futures.

The conference cycle is curated and moderated by João Seixas, geographer and economist, university professor, and researcher at NOVA FCSH in the areas of city policies and urban and territorial development. Author of several books, former consultant to the European Commission, and Pro-Rector of NOVA University of Lisbon for the areas of Social and Territorial Innovation.

Urbs: The Body of the City
Patrícia Melo, Salvador Rueda

What kind of body does a city have? What elements compose it and how does it evolve and transform? Does the way urban spaces and systems are structured affect society, the economy, and the rights of each collective?  Faced with these challenges, how can we reorganise urban structures to make daily life more lived and shared?

25 FEB 7:00 p.m.
Civitas: The Flows of the City
Fátima Vieira, Richard Sennett
Book your seat

The city is a strong network of millions of ties – fragile ties – because they are human. What strengthens, or on the other hand, what weakens the ties between the population in a city? What elements and conditions allow for the formation of heterogeneous, dynamic, and tolerant urban communities, especially in the face of the current crisis of urbanism and unequal access to housing and the city itself?

11 MAR 7:00 p.m.
Polis: The Politics of the City
Paola Viganò, João Ferrão
Book your seat

What new public spaces and vehicles of representation, social action, and political affirmation are needed for the cities of the future? A debate with architect Paola Viganò and geographer João Ferrão.
