Gonçalo Amorim / Teatro Experimental do Porto
In 1983, José Afonso, already gravely debilitated by the illness that would lead to his death four years later, took to the stages of the coliseums in Lisbon and Porto for his final concerts. The Lisbon concert, recorded by RTP, became a landmark in the collective memory of Portugal.
José Afonso, ao vivo nos Coliseus (live at the Coliseums), 1983 is a show that intertwines music, theater, performance, and poetry. It does not intend to recreate the original concert, but rather reinterpret “Zeca's” legacy. The show questions the symbolic farewell that these concerts represented — not only the farewell of an artist, but also the end of an era. With José Afonso's departure, Portugal also seemed to say goodbye to the utopia of April, at a time when the country was preparing for new transformations. It is with this historical and emotional awareness that the show evokes the courage, melancholy, and persistence of a people, celebrating the memory of one of its greatest singers and the indelible echo of his voice in the construction of Portuguese democracy.
