I Try To Remember Where I Come From

Commissioner: Pedro Costa

In promoting his solo work, Jonah Parzen-Johnson leaves us to discover for ourselves the nuances in his music. What we hear might "sound like" an Appalachian choir if a part didn't sound electronic, with his baritone sax, played with a multiphonic circular breathing technique, meandering through the clouds of sound generated by the analogue synthesizer. The melodies are undoubtedly from folk music, pleasant on the ear, but denoting a heavy Chicago influence, namely the free jazz of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, guided by a meditative and even dream-like approach.
