João Hogan
João Hogan
Curated by: Hugo Dinis
2024 marks the 110th anniversary of the birth of artist João Hogan (Lisboa, Portugal, 1914–1988).
The Pantheon enhances the feeling of silence and serenity in the artist’s bucolic paintings, which guide the visitor towards an emotional and sensitive experience, contrasting the city’s winding streets that are represented in the engravings. Perpetuating these contradictory feelings, the painter’s works wish to reveal to future generations “something that never ends”. Through the tension between birth and death, the exhibition pays homage to the Portuguese artist presenting the multiplicity and diversity of his work. The polyphony of the exhibition allows us to enunciate the eloquence of the artist’s form of expression, insofar as each voice or intonation is, in itself a way of being in the present, which questions past historical narratives, and value the individuality of the author’s narrative.
