Philippe Boesmans
Under the theme of ‘forbidden love’, Operafest presents the national premiere of the chamber opera Julie (2007) – a masterpiece of the 21st century, by Belgian composer Philippe de Boesmans, based on the classic dramatic text, Miss Julie (1888), by August Strindberg.
On the eve of St. John's Day, the young aristocrat Julie seduces Jean, the servant of her father, who is the count of the estate, on the same night that her engagement ends. In a struggle of classes and sexes, Julie evokes female emancipation, rebellion, and despair, challenging the current limits of the society in which she lives. A powerful reflection on what moves human beings, and what imprisons and liberates them.
