Quarto de Espanto (Room of Awe) is the third in a cycle of three exhibitions held in Tavira, Bragança, and now Castelo Branco, all sharing the same theme, structure and objective. Like the previous ones, this exhibition is based on a selection of pieces from the Coleção da Caixa Geral de Depósitos, but also incorporates other previously unseen works by a guest artist, and artefacts originating from collections embodying the material culture of the respective host region. With this tangled web of encounters, the aim is not only to contrast the Coleção da CGD with objects from other origins and ages, but, above all, to return to art something that has slowly been taken away from it by today's profusion of images and the increasingly rhetorical nature of contemporary discourses: its undeniable symbolic power.
