In 2021, on the 90th anniversary of the premiere of Douro, Faina Fluvial, the band Sensible Soccers fulfilled their long-held wish to create a soundtrack for this film, which marked Manoel de Oliveira's debut as a filmmaker in 1931. This wish stemmed from the positive experience that they had had with another ambitious endeavour, Dziga Vertov’s classic film Man with a Movie Camera, for which they wrote a score to accompany a one-off live screening of the film. With the addition of O Pintor e a Cidade, another film by the Porto-born director, project Manoel was born, bringing together these two films. Both had Porto as a background, and naturally many commonalities; however, according to the director himself, they were made in opposition to one another. Manoel was eventually released as a record too, completely separate from the films that originated it; however, when played live in a theatre in conjunction with Manoel de Oliveira’s visual poetry, this project earns a very special place in the world of film concerts.
