Musho (meaning "sad song" in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia) are a unique duo composed of Swedish singer, Sofia Jernberg, of Ethiopian descent, with a background in jazz and contemporary erudite music, and classically-trained British pianist and organist, Alexander Hawkins, schooled in creative jazz and free improvisation. Jernberg studied with the master Hailu Mergia, while Hawkins is a disciple of Mulatu Astakte. Using direct and immediate Ethiopian melodies from the Jewish tradition as the focal point for improvisation, their unusual music is especially pleasant on the ear.
