THE MATTER OF RE-ENCHANTMENT

André Barata e Pedro Machado

We start the new year in an atmosphere of re-enchantment, in a conversation with André Barata, a philosopher who has been urging us to think about the time that we spend surviving, instead of living, while also researching into the process that causes us to disconnect from the world; and with Pedro Machado, an astrophysicist, whose research is gradually enabling us to enter into the atmosphere of Venus, and other planets and exoplanets. In this conversation, which will mix together sciences and humanities and will certainly cover the arts, we suggest reimagining a new relationship with matter – the matter of which we are made and which envelops us in its most varied forms and expressions. In what way will a fresh reflection on the technological, affective and existential dematerialisation that we seem to be passing through enable us to conceive of the idea of matter in another way? Is it possible that the knowledge that we are gaining of the cosmos is also transforming the conception that we have of matter, in such a way as to re-enchant us and connect us once more to the world (or to the worlds, in the plural)?
