ECHOS OF THE EMPIRE - MUSICAL REPRESENTATIONS OF RUSSIA

Paulo Ferreira de Castro

Curator: José Neves e Liliana Coutinho

Not only in the tsarist imperial era, but also in the Soviet empire, Russian music managed to produce audio images of the empire as a political and cultural entity, gathering different ethnicities and nationalities, accompanying the successive phases of expansion of its territory throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Through examples, the multiple and sometimes controversial configurations of musical identities and alterities are evoked, as these are reflected in the work of representative composers, such as: Glinka Tchaikovsky, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Khatchaturian.

A session created and presented by Paulo Ferreira de Castro, associate professor and coordinator of the Department of Music Sciences at FCSH (Universidade Nova de Lisboa).
