Hermeto Pascoal & Grupo
In a vain attempt to explain the vastness of Hermeto Pascoal’s work, we rely on a recurring phrase from his biographies where it is claimed that “Hermeto Pascoal is music”. It seems like a reductionist cry in the face of the temptation to hyperbolise the life and work of this Brazilian multi-instrumentalist and composer. Born in the heart of the tropical state of Alagoas, he allowed himself to be accepted by nature, creating a unique dialogue with the elements, making everything his orchestra: animals, water, or even a kettle seem to be worth as much as a piano or saxophone. Gifted with a self-taught irreverence, he crossed his Brazilian music with an idea of jazz, embracing forró or choro, knowing how to design fantasy and knowledgeable scenarios. In other words, music for all the senses, for all of us, just like the destiny of nature. And as we prepare to celebrate his ninetieth birthday, Hermeto Pascoal returns to Culturgest twenty years later to show us how he still is — and always will be — a free and inspiring being.
