PETER WÄCHTLER

A life on stage

PETER WÄCHTLER

A life on stage

Curated by: Bruno Marchand

Melancholy, irony, and humour are transversal characteristics of Peter Wächtler's work. Using narrative and, particularly, soliloquy as main tools, the works of the German artist bring us a universe where fantasy, fables, and a certain slant towards existentialism come together in the creation of proposals that explore a radical ambiguity. Faced with his drawings, sculptures, or films, one often feels a kind of derealisation. As if his characters – coming from another time, in other ways or from other species – would speak better about our little neuroses, disenchantments, and expectations. As if they embody our collective anxiety and point the way to dream, imagination, and allegory as the right paths to a provisional redemption. The exhibition that Wächtler brings to Culturgest will be the artist's debut at a Portuguese institution and will go through the work he has been developing over the last decade.
