Fallen Trees

In late 2018, the album Fallen Trees reintroduced Lubomyr Melnyk to a generation of listeners who, thanks to Erased Tapes Records, but also to Nils Frahm and Peter Broderick, have helped to maintain his name among the leading lights since 2013. Before then, this composer and intrepid adventurer had been traipsing around in the shadows of near invisibility. It was during his stay in Paris, in the early 70s, that Melnyk found in dance the stimulus for composing continuous music, creating the playing technique that would practically dictate the course of his whole career. His astounding agility — which still earns him various speed-playing records — prepared him for studying the possibilities of the piano, as only a few have to this day, composing music with complete mastery of the instrument’s harmonics and resonances, as if he were creating a musical ghost to accompany him in his playing. Besides his music, watching Lubomyr Melnyk perform live also means watching a pioneer in action.
