SHOW POSTPONED
Following the Direção-Geral da Saúde [Portuguese Public Health Authority] recommendations devised to contain the spread of the new Coronavirus (COVID-19), and according to the contingency plan in place, Culturgest informs it will be closed from January 15 until the end of the lockdown.
Encyclopédie de la Parole led by the French director Joris Lacoste has been invited by festivals and theatres all across Europe, including some in Lisbon, to perform their cycle of Suites. Suites No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 were created with actors and singers based on a huge mass of sounds and fragments of text, collected from songs, conversations, instructions, blogs, Internet posts, etc. In the final chapter of the series Suites, Joris Lacoste chose to present the raw material that forms the basis of his performances: the voices recorded from his collection of sounds. No longer is it a question of actors giving life to lost voices, but instead it is the people themselves returning from the past to talk with their own voices, their original melody, their unique tone. Performed to the sound of music written by Macé & Roux, played live by the ensemble Ictus, the show offers us an operatic work spoken in languages from all over the world, ranging from English, Japanese and Portuguese to ‘exotic’ languages such as Susu, Shanghainese or Tomáraho, bringing with them the places, situations and emotions of their origin, important or insignificant events – a thousand details registered in the recordings and reproduced once again for us.
Centred on the tiny and infinite modulations of human speech, Suite No. 4 is a kind of theatre of ghosts, but ones that appear to be clearly alive and who talk, whisper, cry, laugh, preach and console, condemn and encourage, desire and lament, suffer and play and live without ever wanting to die.
