JOÃO BARRADAS

The old and the new mysticism

We know that music is born from science, between waves and frequencies from the laws of physics, but its supernatural magical power continues to astound us, and, more than anything, to disturb us. It has been an important tool in our communications with one another, but it is also a privileged channel enabling us to dialogue with spirits or even with the stars and planets of the universe. And, when we run out of conversational partners, music invents its own worlds, with its own religions and characters, writing its own languages, bibles or dictionaries, transforming magic into mysticism. Culturgest challenged João Barradas to gather together some moments from this mystical world, brought from the European tradition of classical music to the dexterity of contemporary improvisation: ranging from Arvo Pärt and his sacred minimalism to the medieval spiritual light of Hildgard von Bingen, and passing through a tribute to the theosophy of Alexander Scriabin. At the end, we will listen to Choral, composed by João Barradas himself, in which the voice, as the privileged corporeal practice of mysticism, takes on a multitude of forms, including his own. However, it is from the acoustic and synthesised accordion that the most intense of his voices will always emerge, where the air is multiplied in a thousand throats, as the greatest proof of the magic of his instrument, music and art.
