Political Bodies

The body outside the norm in the performing arts

Curated by: Diana Niepce

The Political Bodies series is a research, audience development, and programming project that attempts to map the presence of the body outside the norm in performance, addressing different proposals according to the paradigm of the political body, the body that contests its place in society. Within the scope of this project, a programme is presented that brings together conferences, conversations, training and performances seeking to promote reflection and dialogue about the hierarchy of the body in the performing arts. This hierarchy privileges the normative body and devalues, discriminates and excludes bodies that do not fit the norm. Thus, it perpetuates and justifies ableist mentalities – that is, discrimination against people with disabilities, based on the idea that they are less able. The violence exerted on bodies far from the norm is always present, more or less consciously, and it is through the reformulation of systems that we seek to exhaust it.
